WHAT IS A COOKIE?

A cookie is a harmless text file that is stored in your browser when you visit almost any website. Cookies are designed to enable the website to remember your visit when you return to that page. Although many people are unaware of the fact, cookies have been in use for 20 years, since the first World Wide Web browsers appeared.

It is not a virus, a trojan, a worm, spam or spyware, nor does it open pop-up windows.

WHAT INFORMATION DOES A COOKIE STORE?

The web server does not associate you as a person but your web browser. In fact, if you regularly browse with Internet Explorer and then try to access the same website with Firefox or Chrome, you will notice that the website does not realise that you are the same person because it is associating the access to the browser, not the person.

WHAT TYPES OF COOKIES ARE THERE?

• Advertising cookies: these display advertising based on your browsing, your country of origin, language, etc.
• Technical cookies: these are the most basic and allow the publisher to know when a human or an automated application is browsing, when an anonymous user and a registered user are browsing, as well as basic tasks for the operation of any dynamic website, among other functions.
• Analysis cookies: these collect information about the type of browsing you are doing, the sections you use the most, products consulted, time of day you access the website, language, etc.

WHAT ARE FIRST AND THIRD-PARTY COOKIES?

First-party cookies are those generated by the website you are visiting and third-party cookies are those generated by external services or providers such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DISABLE COOKIES?

Below are some examples of the consequences of disabling cookies:

• You will not be able to share content from the website in question on Facebook, Twitter or any other social network.
• The website will not be able to adapt its content to your personal preferences, as is usually the case in online stores.
• You will not be able to access the personal area of the website, such as My Account, My Profile or My Orders.
• Online stores: it will be impossible for you to purchase items online, they will have to be acquired by phone or by visiting a physical store if one exists.
• It will not be possible to customise your geographic preferences such as time zone, currency or language.
• The website will not be able to perform web analytics on visitors and traffic, which will make it difficult for the website to be competitive.
• You will not be able to write on any available blog, nor will you be able to upload photos, post comments or rate content. The website will also be unable to tell if you are a human or an automated application that generates spam.
• It will not be possible to show targeted advertising, which will reduce the site’s ad revenue.
• All social networks use cookies, if you disable them you will not be able to use any social network.

CAN COOKIES BE DELETED?

Here is how to access a specific cookie on the Chrome browser. Note: these steps may vary depending on the browser version:

1. Go to Settings or Preferences in the File menu or by clicking the customisation icon on the top right.
2. You will see different sections. Click the option Show advanced options.
3. Go to Privacy, Content Settings.
4. Select All cookies and site data.
5. A list will appear with all the cookies ordered by domain to make it easier for you to find cookies from a certain domain
6. Enter part or all of the address in the Search cookies field.
